The first time I wrote an “On the Road” post, we were headed to NM to celebrate #4 grandson/#6 grandchild's 3rd birthday. Technically, it wasn’t really “on the road”. We flew. Nevertheless, we were traveling.
Now, we are headed to Gulfport, MS to meet the latest edition (#6 grandson/# 10 grandchild), in a long line of handsome Hutson men.
This time we are driving, which I prefer.
Long airport waits and flying in a can of packed sardines are not my cup of tea. And why is it that the connecting flight gates are always at opposite ends of the terminal?
We will, however, willingly experience that exact scenario once again in February as we head back out to NM to celebrate #6’s younger sister, #8’s 2nd birthday.
Thankfully, I was able to arrange better flight times from a much closer airport (more in sync with our “retirement” lifestyle now) and one connecting flight both ways.
“Easy Peasy, Cawk” as one of my British military buddies would tell me.
Since Pops & G’mama (Grammies or Mimi to other sets of grands) are just a little past “prime”, we break up what used to be the eight to twelve-hour
Road Warrior drives into two easier 4-hour sessions. Particularly as the first leg took us through Atlanta.
I-85 through Atlanta is not the most enjoyable part of the trip, but on a Sunday evening, it was much better than I expected.
The halfway point for this trip is Auburn, AL, home of the very storied Auburn Tigers.
Future programming note: Now that my beloved Sooners (long story) are moving to the SEC, I am hoping to make the “hop-skip-and-a-jump” drive over to Auburn to attend the matchup next season.
My guess is that the comfort of my family room will more than likely win that contest.
One of the other “senior citizen” pastimes is constantly checking the forecast for where you are and where you are going. So, when I checked the temps in Gulfport, I decided that it would be fruitless to pack shorts on this trip. I mean, it is the Gulf Coast, right?
Such is life.
So, now it’s onward to the joy of kissing those chubba-cheeks and helping out the new parents, hopefully without making a nuisance of ourselves.
Until Next time, my friends.
Stay warm and cozy …
Snap! Thus far, whenever I fly, Planes feel like nothing more than flying death traps I’ve managed to survive!
Have a great trip, and I hope you enjoy the journey as well as the goal.
