In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. - Ephesians 1:13-14
In the Portraits of Salvation series we have looked at salvation in terms of being a Gift, a Birth, and a Lifetime Membership.
Today, we’ll take a brief look at Salvation being a Sure Transaction.
Today, we’ll briefly touch on another aspect of salvation: The practice of “earnest” or pledging of a down-payment.
Almost all real estate transactions include what is known as earnest". Most who have bought a house are familiar with this concept.
Earnest is simply a practice of pledging a down payment to signify the intent of the buyer to follow through or complete the promised purchase. It is a guarantee of a sure transaction. This is important because inherent in the promise is the danger of losing the down payment should the buyer fail to complete the purchase.
What’s Biblically significant about this is that it is the same term/concept that God uses to describe the sure transaction of His promised salvation of our souls.
God’s guarantee to pledge His Holy Spirit as the down payment for our redemption is, by far, is the surest transaction ever made because God CANNOT lose or be separated from His Spirit. This signifies an iron-clad seal that He will follow through with the transaction to its completion in the “day of redemption” when our transformed life will include a brand new body to house our redeemed soul.
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Eph 4:30
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2Co 5:17
Have you been redeemed? Have you accepted God’s pledge of His Spirit as the Earnest for the purchase of your soul? It is offered to all who will respond to His offer (God says “whosoever”).

The gift of the Holy Spirit after Jesus' resurrection and the power of the Holy Spirit to live righteously are key to knowing God! My Calvinist upbringing didn't talk about (or show by example) the redemptive, restorative, and freeing Almighty Power that enables us to be new creatures in Christ. I'm so thankful to be free of that way of thinking and experience truly joyful freedom in Christ! Thanks for this post, Cork.
enjoyable to read your explanation of the seal of the Holy Spirit. Well done.
